Students for Education Reform Interest Meeting

SFER (Students for Education Reform) at SHU will conduct information session on Wednesday, January 30th at 7 PM in Mooney Hall Room 19.

There are some available positions in SFER (Honor Stole Points Available):

•Treasurer: responsible for working with SGA and managing money
•Membership Director: recruiting new students to join the movement towards change in the education system
•Awareness Chair: create programs to inform the Seton Hall community about the issues in education today
•Advocacy Chair: create programs where Seton Hall students can discuss the issues in education today and find ways to combat these issues
•Community and Campus Liaison: responsible for working with the South Orange community and interacting with the Seton Hall community to connect them Social Media Chair: responsible for advertising SFER through mainstream social media websites, creating flyers, and finding new ways to reach other students

Congratulations to Dr. Christopher Tienken, Editor of the Kappa Delta Pi Record, Editor of the AASA Journal of Scholarship & Practice and Assistant Professor for the Department of Education Leadership, Management and Policy at Seton Hall University; Doctors Tienken and Donald Orlich will have their book, The School Reform Landscape: Fraud, Myth, and Lies published in March by Rowan and Littlefield.

The authors take an in-depth and controversial look at school reform since the launch of Sputnik. They scrutinize school reform events, proposals, and policies from the last 60 years through the lens of critical social theory and examine the ongoing tensions between the need to keep a vibrant unitary system of public education and the ongoing assault by corporate and elite interests in creating a dual system.

Some of events, proposals, and policies critiqued include the Sputnik myth, A Nation At Risk, No Child Left Behind, the lies of the Common Core State Standards Initiative, and other common reform schemes. The authors provide an evidence-based contrarian view of the free-market reform ideas and pierce the veil of the new reform policies to find that they are built not upon empirical evidence, but instead rest solidly on foundations of myth, fear, and lies. Ideas for a new set of reform policies, based on empirical evidence and supportive of a unitary, democratic system of education are presented.

SHU Social Mentors Needed - 15 Honor Stole Points

15 Honor Stole Points for Involvement in the SHU Mentoring Program Below: The Center for Multiculturalism & Civic Engagement (CMCE) and the Office of International Programs (OIP) are seeking people like YOU, who are enthusiastic about meeting people of different cultures, who have an interest in making connections, participating in campus life events, as well as, encouraging active involvement in student organizations through a Social Mentoring program. The goal of the Social Mentor’s Program is to facilitate social interaction between Seton Hall local and international students. Navigation through a different culture and environment can be challenging. With your participation in this program, we are certain to provide a friendly campus where international students can feel comfortable, welcome and included. Our hope is that you, as a Social Mentor, will be able to provide information and resources, and that together, we will identify the needs of our international student population. Our mentors and mentees will have an opportunity to connect and communicate at our monthly meeting with the goal of integrating international students into campus life. We are asking that you attend at least one event, every two weeks, with your mentee. Our next monthly meeting will take place Wednesday, November 14, 2012 in the evening.
