Volunteers Needed - Ed Career Fair 3/13

The Career Center is seeking volunteers to assist with this Wednesday’s Education Career Fair (March 13th). Tasks include showing employers to their tables, student registration, handing out directories, or helping to take down everything at the end.
You can volunteer anytime between 3:15 and 6:30 pm—we especially need assistance between 3:30 and 4:30 pm. You will also have time to meet with employers, too!

Center for College Readiness Spring Lecture Series (5 Honor Stole Pts Each)

Joseph Nelson, Associate Director, Center for the Study of Boys’ & Girls’ Lives University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. Mr. Nelson is a Ph.D candidate in Urban Education at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He holds a BA in Sociology from Loyola University, Chicago. He previously worked as a Research Consultant at New York University’s Metropolitan Center for Urban Education. Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Mr. Nelson taught first-grade in a single-gender classroom for 2-years.
 
The focus of Mr. Nelson’s lecture will be the construction of masculinity at a single-sex middle school for African-American boys in New York City.

Mellie Torres, Ph.D., Post Doctoral Fellow at New York University’s Metropolitan Center for Urban Education. Dr. Mellie Torres received her Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning, from the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development at New York University, a Masters in Public Policy at the University of Michigan, and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at Seton Hall University. Prior to her doctoral studies, Torres was a high school mathematics teacher in her hometown of Newark, New Jersey.  Dr.Torres has received numerous fellowships and honors, including the AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship, the Mainzer Fellowship in Gender Studies, the Fredrick Douglass Summer Teaching Fellow, and the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education.

Ms. Nellie's research explores the relationship between the multiple and intersecting social identities (race/ethnicity, class, and gender) of Latino male students and their academic identities.

Crisis Prevention and Intervention Workshop

Crisis Prevention and Intervention featuring Margaret Brady-Amoon, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Professional Psychology and Family Therapy will be held on Thursday, February 21st at 5:30 PM, Seton Hall University, Jubilee Hall, 4th floor, Dean’s Conference Room – Room 465.

The recent school-based tragedies have prompted a great deal of concern about school and community safety as well as mental health. This presentation will provide an overview of crisis prevention and intervention geared towards students preparing for careers in education and mental health.

Students for Education Reform Interest Meeting

SFER (Students for Education Reform) at SHU will conduct information session on Wednesday, January 30th at 7 PM in Mooney Hall Room 19.

There are some available positions in SFER (Honor Stole Points Available):

•Treasurer: responsible for working with SGA and managing money
•Membership Director: recruiting new students to join the movement towards change in the education system
•Awareness Chair: create programs to inform the Seton Hall community about the issues in education today
•Advocacy Chair: create programs where Seton Hall students can discuss the issues in education today and find ways to combat these issues
•Community and Campus Liaison: responsible for working with the South Orange community and interacting with the Seton Hall community to connect them Social Media Chair: responsible for advertising SFER through mainstream social media websites, creating flyers, and finding new ways to reach other students
